India’s winter, from November to February, is a wonderful time to explore. Mountains turn white, deserts become pleasantly mild, and the coast basks in gentle sunshine. Here are eight destinations at their very best this season.
Gulmarg, Kashmir: a skier’s paradise
Fresh snow, crisp air and spectacular scenery make Gulmarg one of India’s most enchanting winter destinations. The slopes of Mount Apharwat are renowned among skiers, and the gondola offers unforgettable views even if you never strap on a pair of skis.

Manali, Himachal Pradesh: the classic hill escape
One of India’s best-loved hill stations, Manali becomes a winter wonderland of snowy peaks, cedar forests and cosy cafés. It is ideal for families, couples and anyone dreaming of snowfall.
Jaisalmer, Rajasthan: a golden escape
The desert is at its most inviting in winter, when days are warm and nights are filled with stars. Explore the living Jaisalmer Fort, the royal cenotaphs of Bada Bagh and the dunes of Sam, and time your visit for the city’s colourful Desert Festival.

Rann of Kutch, Gujarat: the white desert
Each winter, the vast salt desert of Kutch hosts the Rann Utsav, a celebration of Gujarat’s music, crafts and cuisine that usually runs from November to February. Under a full moon, the shimmering white landscape is truly otherworldly.
Puducherry: a French accent
With its pastel streets, French-colonial architecture and seaside promenade, Puducherry is especially lovely in December, making it a favourite for New Year celebrations. Do not miss the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, and book early, as December is the town’s busiest season.
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand: the adventure capital
Mild days and cool nights make winter a wonderful time to visit Rishikesh, celebrated for river rafting, bungee jumping and cliff jumping, as well as yoga and peaceful evenings beside the Ganges.
Coorg, Karnataka: the Scotland of India
Set in the Western Ghats, Coorg is a lush landscape of coffee plantations, misty hills and waterfalls, perfect for gentle treks and slow, restful mornings.
Goa: winter sunshine
Winter is Goa’s high season, with clear blue skies, lively beach parties and excellent food, plus beautiful Portuguese-era churches to explore by day.

Our tip: Winter is peak season, especially around Christmas and New Year. Reserve flights and hotels two to three months in advance for the widest choice.
